MyGeneticsTree: A Digital Tool for Identifying Patients at Risk for Hereditary Cancer
While the majority of cancer is sporadic and occurs by chance, approximately 5-10% is hereditary and occurs because an individual was born with a harmful change in a gene that increased their risk to develop cancer1. It is estimated that approximately 5-10% of breast cancer2, up to 10% of colorectal cancer3, 5-10% of prostate cancer4, and up to 24% of ovarian cancer5 is due to a harmful change in a gene associated with hereditary cancer. Other types of cancer may also be hereditary.
MyGeneticsTree is an automated and secure digital tool that helps healthcare providers identify patients eligible for hereditary cancer genetic testing. It is simple enough that patients can complete the questionnaire on their own (at home) in advance of their appointment, or while in the waiting room. MyGeneticsTree is computer, tablet, and mobile-friendly.
Benefits of using MyGeneticsTree
MyGeneticsTree can be used to analyze a patient’s personal history & family history to determine if they meet national criteria for hereditary cancer genetic testing.
Individuals with a personal and/or family history of one of more of the following may be at risk for hereditary cancer:
  • Cancer at a young age (under 50)
  • Rare cancers at any age (such as male breast cancer, pancreatic, ovarian cancer)
  • More than one type of cancer in the same individual (also referred to as multiple primary cancers)
  • 10 or more colon polyps
  • A known genetic alteration in the family
  • Multiple cases of cancers on one side of the family spanning multiple generations
  • An individual of Ashkenazi Jewish descent with breast, prostate, ovarian, or pancreatic cancer at any age
MyGeneticsTree automates the process of identifying patients that meet criteria and focuses on patients at risk for hereditary cancer. Upon patient completion of the assessment, you will receive a personalized report identifying hereditary cancer syndromes for which your patient qualifies for testing. It also recommends genes you may consider ordering based upon the patient's history and medical neccesity. For testing deemed medically necessary, test options are available through BioReference Health or GenPath.
For more information on hereditary cancers testing options available through BioReference Health, please visit the BioReference Health website.
